Master of Science in Marine Biology Requirements

The Batangas State University through the Verde Island Passage Center for Oceanographic Research and Aquatic Life Science and College of Arts and Science (Main I) would like to inform everyone of the official offering of the newest graduate program of the University – Master of Science in Marine Biology. The program will be offered this coming 1st Semester, Academic Year 2020-2021.

Interested applicants may email their requirements for a preliminary evaluation to vipcorals@g.batstate-u.edu.ph.

Kindly wait for further information regarding the application form and entrance examination since the Testing and Admission Office (TAO) is still finalizing the new guidelines to accommodate the changes brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Reminders:
1. The subject of the email should follow this format – MS Marine Biology Application_Surname.
2. Recommendation letters should be directly emailed by the recommenders.
3. The filename of the recommendation letter should follow this format – Recommendation Letter_Surname of Applicant.

Balik Scientist Webinars

During the Enhanced Community Quarantine, Balik Scientist Dr. Jayvee A. Saco conducted a series of webinars on “Green Tide Blooms in the Philippines.”

The first webinar was launched on April 27, 2020, in coordination with DOST-PCAARRD. A second webinar was carried out on May 4, 2020, to accommodate those who were not able to participate in the first webinar.

On May 15, 2020, Dr. Jayvee A. Saco was invited as a speaker to a webinar entitled “Biology: Through the Eyes of Research” organized the PLM Society for Biological Sciences. On the same day, Dr. Jayvee A. Saco participated in the pilot episode of #MicroVlogs organized by the UP MSI – Microbial Oceanography Laboratory as part of the celebration of the Month of the Ocean.

VIP CORALS celebrates its 2nd Anniversary

On February 28, 2020, VIP CORALS organized a seminar as a celebration of its 2nd Founding Anniversary. Dr. Tirso A. Ronquillo gave his welcome remarks and felicitations to the participants and guests.

Dr. Jonel Corral shared his expertise on “Parasitic Relationship between Isopod and Crab in the Marine Environment,” while Dr. Miguel Azcuna shared his expertise on “Allelopathic Compounds from Sponge: Understanding the Ecological Roles and Screening for Bioactivity.”

Dr. Jayvee Saco, a Balik Scientist, also launched his lecture series on “Green Tide Blooms in the Philippines.”

Deo Macahig, President of the University of the Philippines Marine Science Society (UP MaSS), also shared some of the activities and projects of their organization.

Dr. Shirley Cabrera concluded the event through her warm closing remarks.

During the afternoon, UP MaSS held a film showing about the marine environment.

Eco Camp Meeting

The VIP CORALS team had a meeting with SEA Institute and Dr. Katherine Sanchez-Escalona of MinSCAT on February 10 for the future schedules and activities for the Eco Camp by the Sea.

Dr. Kent Carpenter’s Lecture-Forum

Committed to protect our marine ecosystems, the Batangas State University has partnered with the United States Embassy to host Dr. Kent Carpenter, a Professor in Biological Sciences at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia for a lecture-forum on November 20, 9:30 AM at the Lecture Room, CITE Building, Batangas State University Pablo Borbon Main I, Rizal Avenue Extension, Batangas City.

The program started with an invocation and the singing of the Philippine National Anthem. Dr. Tirso A. Ronquillo gave his welcome message followed by an AVP presentation of the VIP CORALS. Dr. Romel U. Briones introduced the resource person, Dr. Kent Carpenter. The lecture of Dr. Carpenter entitled “Environmental Damage to Coral Reefs in the South China Sea and International Arbitration Under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea” provided insights and raised awareness about the detrimental effects of human activities to the coral reefs. Students from different colleges were present during the lecture-forum.
