Field-testing of Laboratory-reared Kappaphycus and Eucheuma spp. in Potential Farming Sites in Batangas Province (FLaKE Project)

RATIONALE

    This project provided livelihood opportunities to selected fisherfolks associations in Palawan by establishing seaweed nurseries utilizing the pre-selected fast-growing cultivars from the culture facilities of Palawan State University (PSU).

OBJECTIVE

      To assess the laboratory-reared seaweed in potential sites and community acceptability of seaweed farming in selected sites in Batangas Province.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • The FLaKE Project was approved on December 19, 2023, by the funding organization, the Department of Science and Technology –  Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD). 

  • The planting of Eucheumatoid seaweed species in Lian and San Luis, Batangas was carried out from January 26 to 30, 2026. During this period, the project team also administered the KAP Analysis pretest to members of the Fisherfolk Associations of Lian and San Luis.

  • The acquisition of Eucheumatoid seaweed species and the conduct of initial planting activities were completed on January 23, 2026, in Brgy. Masaguitsit, Lobo, Batangas.
