Preface
Verde. The color of life.

Isla Verde is aptly named for the rich life that inhabits the island. It lies within a passage said to be the center of the center of marine shore fish biodiversity—the Verde Island Passage or VIP (Carpenter and Springer 2005). Although the island alone is rich in marine life, few studies have been conducted to survey and monitor the biodiversity in the area. The Batangas State University established the Verde Island Center of Oceanographic Research and Aquatic Life Sciences (VIP CORALS) to spearhead the marine science research in the region. One of the early projects of the center is the establishment of a marine repository hub for specimen collections and data on the marine flora and fauna of the VIP. The VIP VORALS Marine Repository Hub was developed with the aim of becoming a centralized repository for marine specimen collections and information from the VIP. This project went along with another university-funded project that surveyed and assessed the coastal ecosystems and marine life in Isla Verde, including phytoplankton, seaweeds, seagrass, mangroves, beach resort, invertebrates, and fish. The current collections of the repository are mostly from Isla Verde. This coffee table book is one or the outputs of the marine repository hub project and features photos of some of the marine organisms of the island and collected specimens, as well as photos of the island’s coastal landscape and marinescape. Let the pages of the book take you to the waters of the island, and discover the unique and diverse and coastal and marine life that make up Isla Verde.
